RASHERS REVIEW: The Goat Grill Pub, Goatstown, Dublin, Ireland.
It is rare that you find a near perfect breakfast in a pub, but that is what we found when we went to the Goat pub in Dublin in search of a feed. From the moment we walked in the door it ticked all the boxes. The bar was clean, had a relaxed air about it, and the barman greeted us with a smile, a big hello and directed us to a nice table by the window. The table was lid out nicely too. The fresh flower in a vase, all condiments already there and the extensive menu had us smiling as we enjoyed the smell of bacon in the air.
We decided to go for the full Irish, but there were a lot of options on the menu, from a couple of eggs via a mini breakfast to our full Irish. Our order was taken and the coffee arrived swiftly. The wait for the main feature was about as long as it would have taken the egg to fry and it arrived on a good hot plate and again a smile and friendly word from the barman.
The breakfast was without fault. hat doesn't sound like a compliment, but it is there is always something we notice that could be improved on, but this had everything done just right. OK, so down to the details as I am sure that's what you want to hear:
We got two sausages, two rashers, perfectly fried egg, mushrooms, black pudding, white pudding, tomato and beans. It all came with a pot of coffee, ample supply of toast with butter that (for a change) wasn't rock hard. The cost was less than a tenner which was very good value in Dublin. Definitely a breakfast I look forward to reviewing again.

RASHERS REVIEW: Dunnes Stores cafe, Cornelscourt, Dublin 18, Ireland.
We went in search of a nice Irish Breakfast and found ourselves in Cornelscourt, and tried to get one in the Dunnes Stores cafe. They had signs for breakfast all through the entrance so we thought it would be easy enough. Sadly they had not taken the signs down, although breakfast was no longer available. But - luckily for us we spotted that a 'brunch' was still available. From what we could gather this basically meant the pudding, mushrooms, etc. were replaced with chips (although there may be other differences).
The brunch was a big plate filled with beans, chips, one rasher, two sausages and also came with a tea or coffee. As you can see from the photo it looked pretty darn good. Sadly it didn't taste so great. The chips were hard, the egg was bathed in grease, and when one of us didn't want beans we were told at the till another item could be had instead - rather than being told when we were being served. his meant to get said sausage we would have to leave the till queue and join the long food queue, get the sausage and return to the till queue - all the time watching the grease congeal on the brunch. Needless to say, we let the sausage go to some other hungry punter.
The staff were very nice and friendly, and we were able to get a table. But you did have the feeling this was the staff canteen turned into a money making venture without improving the quality above canteen levels. On the up side, it was quite good value.

RASHERS REVIEW: Sainsbury's supermarket cafe, Bristol, England.
While over in England on business, I found myself hungry mid morning driving out of Bristol. There is a little business park just off the A38 and in there is a Sainsbury's supermarket. They have a quiet little cafe that serves a brilliant breakfast as pictured above. The staff were really warm and friendly, enjoying the Irish brogue, and happy to have a chat. The breakfast was £5 which was good for what it was - 2 slices toast, coffee, tomato, rashers, a perfect fried egg, hash browns, beans and two sausages.
The quality of the food was very good, and there were free newspapers to have a read. Add to that the free parking, and general relaxed air and you have an ideal English Breakfast.
